Future growth in sustainable, resilient and climate friendly organic and conventional European aquaculture

The overall objective of “FutureEUAqua” is to effectively promote sustainable growth of resilient to climate changes, environmental friendly organic and conventional aquaculture of major fish species and low trophic level organisms in Europe, to meet future challenges with respect to the growing consumer demand for high quality, nutritious and responsibly produced food. To this end, “FutureEUAqua” will promote innovations in the whole value chain, including genetic selection, ingredients and feeds, non-invasive monitoring technologies, innovative fish products and packaging methods, optimal production systems, taking into account socioeconomic considerations by means of the participation of a wide spectrum of stakeholders, training and dissemination activities.
Starting on May 2019, the department of Industrial Design and Production Engineering, University of West Attica is involved in Work Package 6 (via the participation of Associate Professor D. Dimogianopoulos), and specifically in the development of a prototype device capable of non-destructively evaluating texture of tested fish, and, hence, assessing fish freshness or dietary history. The Fish Texture Evaluation Tool (FTET), as is referred to hereafter, is developed along two main axes. The first one is related to the hardware design, namely a bespoke experimental test rig to be used for testing fish samples by operating on non-destructive vibration testing techniques normally used for fault diagnosis in mechanical systems and purposely modified for the given application. The second axis is related to the algorithmic framework for test data exploitation, which postulates the development of specially designed algorithms for calculating specific mechanical parameters of fish flesh and thereby evaluating its freshness or dietary attributes. The performances and functionality of the FTET will be implemented, validated and demonstrated at industrial environment (TRL5-TRL6), to achieve demonstrations in its operational environment (TRL7).
